The twin peaks of Huascarán are among the most prominent and highest in Peru and dominate the entire Santa River valley. Huascaran, at 6,768 meters, is also the highest tropical mountain in the Americas and has attracted numerous expeditions from all over the world since the beginning of the 20th century.

It is a mountain of great beauty, with an easy approach and a not very technical but glacier route, which crosses seracs, crevasses and ice cascades. Its difficulty can increase considerably depending on weather conditions and the state of the ice, so it is essential to have a good physical preparation, experience in high mountain and adequate acclimatization to reach the summit, which will reward us with unbeatable views.

Itinerary

Day 1 – Madrid – Lima (Peru)

Departure by scheduled flight to Lima. Arrival and transfer to the hotel. Lodging.

Day 2 – Lima – Huaraz (3,100m)

Breakfast. Transfer to the bus terminal to leave by regular bus to the city of Huaraz (approximately 8h). As we approach this town we will gradually gain altitude, until we reach 3,100 meters. Once in Huaraz, we will transfer to the hotel.
Lodging.
Note: It is possible to take a night bus to Huaraz and spend the day in Lima.

Day 3 – Huaraz (3,100m)

Free day in Huaraz, mainly to acclimatize to the altitude. We recommend optionally trekking to Laguna Churup (4,450 m).
Lodging.

Day 4 – Huaraz – Musho (2,990 m) – base camp (4,200 m)

Breakfast. Today we will transfer to Musho from where we will start a 3 hour hike to the base camp.
We will pass through a eucalyptus forest and continue along a moraine ridge until we reach a small queñual forest, where we will sleep at an altitude of 4,200 meters.
Lodging and full board.

Day 5 – Base camp (4,200 m) – Moraine (4,800 m)

Breakfast. Today we will advance until we reach 4,800 m of altitude.
Lodging and full board.

Day 6 – Moraine (4,800 m) – Camp 1 (5,300 m)

Breakfast. We will advance to the foot of the glacier, going up a slope of about 30º. After crossing some small crevasses we will arrive at camp 1 (5,300 m).

Day 7 – Camp 1 (5,300 m) – Camp 2 (5,950 m)

Breakfast. This will be the most difficult day of the ascent as we will cross the famous “canaleta”, a key pass of Huascaran where avalanches are frequent and which is also crossed by huge crevasses and hanging seracs. Our mountain guides will provide the security to cross this channel until we finally reach Camp 2.
Lodging and full board.

Day 8 – Camp 2 (5,950 m) – Summit (6,768 m) – Camp 2 (5,950 m)

Breakfast. Today we will leave early in the morning and advance through the pass towards the east, until we reach a corridor of about 45º below some seracs.
Then we will continue between seracs, with slopes of about 40º and we will continue through a plain by which we will continue in southeast direction and that will lead us to the summit. From there we will be able to enjoy one of the most spectacular landscapes of the Cordilleras Blanca and Negra, and the satisfaction of having reached the highest summit of Peru.
The descent will be made by the same route to Camp 2.

Day 9 – Camp 2 (5,950 m) – Base Camp (4,200 m)

Breakfast. We will continue our descent until we reach the base camp.
Lodging and full board.

Day 10 – Base camp (4,200 m) – Huaraz

Breakfast. Final descent and return to the city of Huaraz for a well-deserved rest.
Lodging.

Day 11 – Huaraz

Breakfast. We reserve one day in case there is any unforeseen event. Lodging in Huaraz is included.
Note: in case this day is used in the mountain, a supplement for guide and porter services applies.

Day 12 – Huaraz – Lima – Spain

Breakfast. Departure by bus back to Lima. Upon arrival, transfer to Lima airport to take the flight back to Spain. Overnight on board.

Practical information

Situation

The Huascarán is located in the Cordillera Blanca, a mountain range in northern Peru.

Recommended time of year

From May to September, due to the absence of rainfall.

Weather

The climate is marked by two seasons during the year. It depends on the humid and warm winds coming from the Amazon basin, which generate abundant rainfall during the months of December to March; and a marked dry season, between May and October, with sunny days that reach 25° C and nights of intense cold in which frosts and temperatures below 0° C are frequent.
