Alpamayo Expedition (5,947 meters)

Description

This expedition will take us to conquer the summit of what is considered by many to be the most beautiful mountain on the planet: the Alpamayo, located in the middle of the impressive natural scenery of the Cordillera Blanca. Read more

The Alpamayo rises to 5,947m with its incomparable southwest face in the northern part of this mountain range that is home to some of the most spectacular mountains in South America. High peaks, eternal snows, extraordinarily steep slopes, granite walls and ice, awe-inspiring in this magnificent scenery.

Despite being considerably lower than the neighboring mountains, it is distinguished by its unusual symmetry and exuberant appearance. Its normal route is rather difficult, especially for those inexperienced in ice climbing, because in the final section the route is a steep chute. It is also demanding because there is a section of hanging seracs quite exposed and the verticality of the wall requires constant concentration. With an average slope of 60 degrees, it forms an almost perfect ice pyramid. Climbing this mountain requires experience, motivation and willpower.

The reward is the scenery that presents itself before the climber’s eyes, with imposing icy mountain walls such as the northern Huandoy, the Artesonraju and the northern Huascaran, a postcard perfectly comparable to the best of the Himalayan geography.

Departure by scheduled flight to Lima. Arrival and transfer to the hotel.
Lodging.

Day 2 – Lima – Huaraz (3,100)

Breakfast. Transfer to the bus terminal to leave by regular bus to the city of Huaraz (approximately 8h). As we approach this town we will gradually gain altitude, until we reach 3,100 meters. Once in Huaraz, we will transfer to the hotel.
Lodging.

Day 3 – Huaraz

Breakfast. Today we will make an acclimatization trek to Laguna Churup, located at 4,600 meters. Although the difficulty is low, we will be able to feel the effects of the altitude.
Afterwards we will return to Huaraz.
Lodging.

Day 4 – Huaraz – Cashapampa – Llamacorral (3,750 m)

Breakfast. We will leave Huaraz and transfer to Cashapampa (2,900 m above sea level), a three-hour drive that will take us through beautiful agricultural communities located between the Cordilleras Blanca and Negra.
Once in Cashapampa we will meet with the support team for the ascent and begin the hike through a narrow valley. We will ascend walking for about two hours and after lunch (picnic type) we will begin the ascent through an almost flat area to the first camp in Llamacorral.
Lodging and full board.

Day 5 – Llamacorral – Alpamayo Base Camp (4,200 m)

Breakfast. We will start our hike through the valley enjoying the beautiful turquoise lakes called Ichicocha and Jatuncocha. Then we will travel north to the base camp, which is in a place of great beauty, with green areas and crystal clear waters.
We will arrive early and prepare the harnesses for the next day.
Lodging and full board.

Day 6 – Base Camp – Moraine Camp (4,600 m)

Breakfast. From base camp, the route takes a top of the moraine and crosses the rocks across the edge of the glacier to reach a platform area ideal for camping. This camping area is very limited and if it were not possible to camp here, we would climb to the next camp on the same day.
Lodging and full board.

Day 7-MorrenaCamp(4,600 m) – Camp 1 (5,300 m)

Breakfast. The route above the moraine camp continues over the ice before a 300m snow corridor leading to a col between Alpamayo and Quitaraju (6,040m). This section is probably the most technical and difficult part of the route.
After reaching the pass, there is a short descent to reach the high camp where we will set up camp.
Lodging and full board.

Day 8 – Camp 1 – Alpamayo Summit (5,947 m) – Camp 1

Early breakfast. Afterwards, we will start climbing using headlamps and we will reach the base of the wall (Ferrari route) with an inclination of approximately 75º. We will climb the wall and after 2 or 3 hours we will reach the top, where we will have a breathtaking view of the white mountain peaks and we will be overwhelmed by an immense satisfaction that will compensate all the effort.
Afterwards, we will rappel down with the help of our guide to reach Camp 1 just in time for lunch and an afternoon rest.
Lodging and full board.

Day 9 – Camp 1 – Base Camp

Breakfast. From the glacier we will start the descent to the base camp.
