The trip, designed as a “road trip” starts in Reykjavik and offers a circular route that will allow us to visit the best of the country: the “Golden Triangle” composed of the Thingvellir National Park, the Geysir geothermal air and Gulfoss waterfall, as well as the black sand coastal town of Vik and the Vatnajökull, the largest glacier in Europe.

Itinerary

Day 1 Spain – Reykjavik – Hveragerdi

Departure by scheduled flight to Reykjavik. Arrival at Keflavik International Airport and pick up rental car.
Departure by road to the south coast for accommodation.

Day 2 Hveragerdi – Reykjavik – Thingvellir National Park – South Coast (310 km)

Breakfast. In the morning, we will continue our journey south. The first stop will be at Thingvellir National Park, a site that in addition to scenic beauty, has great historical importance as it was the place where the first European parliament was held. Continuation to visit the impressive Gulfoss waterfall and the Geysir eruption springs area. Possibility to visit the Seljalandsfoss and Skogafoss waterfalls, located on the south coast, before the Dyrhoaley Gorge. Overnight stay. Optionally you can take a boat excursion to the Westman Islands.

Day 3 Kirkjubæjarklaustur – Skaftafel – Jökulsárlón – Höfn (270 km)

Breakfast. Continuation of the trip heading east to the small town of Vík, located at the southern tip of the island. This place will delight us with its long black sand beach and a climate that is usually sunnier. We leave Vík to continue to Höfn, crossing lava fields located just below the largest glacier in Europe, the Vatnajökull. Stop at Skaftafell National Park, at the foot of the glacier, for a hike that in about 1 hour, leads to the famous Black Waterfall (Svartifoss), the park offers many other options for trekking and glacier activities. Afterwards, we leave the park to continue to the wonderful Jökulsárlón glacier lagoon, where it is possible to observe seals resting on pieces of ice. Optionally you can take a boat ride to tour the lagoon and see the ancient ice up close. Drive to the fishing village of Höfn. Overnight stay.
Optionally you can take a boat trip on the Jökulsárlón lagoon or a glacier hike on Skaftafell.

Day 4 Höfn – Egilsstadir (300 km)

Breakfast. Today you follow the coastal road to travel through the eastern fjords, between majestic mountains and fishing villages, to reach the town of Egilsstadir, where you spend the night. Overnight.

Day 5 Egilsstadir – Dettifoss – Húsavík – Mývatn (310 km)

Breakfast. Leave Egilsstadir heading north towards the Myvatn Lake area. On the way you can stop to admire the most impressive waterfall in Europe, Dettifoss, as well as the great gorge of Asbyrgi. The itinerary continues to the interior of the Tjornes peninsula, to the town of Husavik, from where boat trips depart to see different types of whales. Husavik is also a picturesque village with pleasant cafes and an interesting museum. Lodging.

Day 6 Mývatn – Akureyri (130 km)

Breakfast. The first part of the day is dedicated to discover the surroundings of Lake Myvatn and land of fire, which offers landscapes of volcanoes, sulfataras and magmatic formations. In the afternoon you should continue to the Waterfall of the Gods (Godafoss) and finally continue to Akureyri, the second largest city in the country. Akureyri is a lively city with a great cultural offer in which there are also some trails for trekking.
We also recommend a visit to the Mývatn Bird Museum.
Accommodation.

Day 7 Akureyri – Borgarnes – Reykjavik (490 km)

Breakfast. Leaving Akureyri following the main road to Borgarfjordur, to visit the inland valleys with the Deildartunguhver hot springs lagoon, where it is possible to bathe. Afterwards, visit the Hraunfossar waterfalls.
Arrival in Reykjavik at the end of the day. Accommodation.
Optionally you can do rafting in Skagafjördur or a whale watching excursion in Hvammstangi.

Note: Alternatively and only if you take a 4×4 car, it is possible to cross the highlands of Kjölur to the geothermal air of Hveravellir, before returning to Reykjavik.

Day 8 Reykjavik – Spain

Breakfast. Free time until transfer to Keflavik International Airport for your flight back to Spain. Return of the vehicle at the airport.

Iceland, despite its geographical location, just south of the Arctic Circle, has a temperate climate thanks to the Gulf currents that reach the west and south coast of the island.
